Mercury content in crude oil is a growing problem for the refiners. Much of the mercury in crude oil and refined product streams existed in elemental form. Almost all hydrocarbons contain mercury, include natural gas, LNG, naphtha which it is likely to be present as elemental mercury or as organo-metallic and ionic mercury. Elemental mercury is a relatively low boiling species. Mercury present could poison downstream catalysts such as in the catalytic reformer or isomerisation unit.
